College Students- here is my #1 piece of advice

As an educator in higher education for almost 30 years, I advise students that it’s who you know more than what you know.

Here are some actions to do that won’t be told to you in any class which will help you succeed in and after your college years.

  1. Get Involved: Join clubs and activities on campus. Meeting as many fellow classmates in different circles on campus will help you navigate and leverage job opportunities.

  2. Go to the Career Services Office: Sign up for the Career Service’s community email blasts and begin attending their sponsored events such as networking and alumni sponsored events, panel discussions and career focused workshops (resume building and mock interviews) to help gain the skills you need to acquire the needed internship in today’s world.

  3. Meet students outside of organized activities such as class and clubs. You don’t need to be a social butterfly but you can’t be in your dorm room all the time if you want to leverage meeting others and feel included in the community at your college or university.

  4. Don’t burn any bridges: What does this mean? Sure some friendships and relationships don’t last a lifetime but they also do not need to end poorly. Work on your interpersonal skills in order to make sure that people think of you in a positive way, that can come back to you in the future, tenfold.

  5. Communication Skills/Social Media: #4 leads me to say, never publicly bully or treat someone cruelly on social media or in public. Keep your personal life, well, private. Future employers can check your social media, and if they find something inappropriate they will quickly pass to the next candidate.
