Junior Year Timeline
Fall:
The official beginning of the college selection process.
Register for AP exams.
Beginning of school year meet with school counselor and create a personal timeline.
This year's academic record will be the most important.
Take the PSAT in October (this one is to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Competition).
Tweak and maintain time management for all aspects of your life: academic, personal and social.
Maintain involvement in extracurricular activities and run for leadership positions in the sports/organizations you are involved in.
Continue to save your best work in your academic portfolio.
Attend college fairs/rep visits, financial aid seminars and other college-related events.
Winter:
Meet with school counselor to create course selection for senior year during the winter months.
Take either the SAT or ACT during your Junior year of high school. Plan to prep for it leading up to the test date.
Talk to friends and family to gather ideas on colleges.
Meet with school counselor for suggestions to create a college list (based on size of school, major, scholarships, location, etc.) Curate a list.
Meet with school counselor to discuss course selection for senior year.
Spring:
Visit college campuses (campus tour, visit with advisors/faculty, pick up admission packet, interview (if required or recommended).
Volunteer or work in your community.
Explore careers and job opportunities.
Ask 2 teachers for a letter of recommendation. (Ask in-person and say thank you)
Complete your Brag Sheet for your school counselor.
Draft and complete your college essay. (summer months)
Research and compose a list of scholarships to apply.
