Transfer Tips and Advice
If you have completed at least one semester worth of college credit, than a school typically will consider you a college transfer applicant. Keep your options open, sometimes, another semester at your school might help you settle in and find your people. Get involved.
It’s a bit different yet similar to applying as a first year applicant. Here is my general advice.
If you want to transfer, you need to apply during the term prior to when you want to start at the new school. Deadlines are early. So, you do not apply a month before the term you want to start at the new school, unless it’s a local state school, they are usually much more flexible.
Essay: The essay needs to explain why you want to transfer to College X and why it’s a better fit for you than the university you are leaving. Do not complain about your current school. Keep it professional and stick to why the school you are applying to is a better fit. Link your major of interest, extracurriculars and personal interests as reasons to make the move.
Involvment: If you are not yet, get involved at the school you think you want to transfer out of. You need to show you are going to particpate on campus at the school you want to switch to.
Organized: You will need to collect letters of recommendation from professors, your high school transcript and mid-year report from a dean or Registrar to show you are leaving in good standing.
